The Minister for Migration, Johan Forssell (M), notes that Sweden still has a travel ban for Syria. At the same time, he would like to see a concrete proposal from the EU Commission on rules for how Syrians can travel home and investigate the situation, without risking their refugee status in the meantime.
It is still very uncertain how it will turn out in Syria, but this would be a way for many to be able to travel back home. Maybe they will also choose to return permanently, says Forssell on his way to a ministerial meeting with other EU colleagues in Brussels on Wednesday.
The Ministers for Migration are simultaneously gearing up for the proposals that the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, will present on Tuesday next week on updated rules to get more deportees to actually leave the EU. Here, Forssell also wants to see proposals on testing so-called "return hubs", where deportees can be gathered in countries outside the EU while waiting to be taken to their home countries.
