Duplantis skipped the two initial heights and entered the competition at 5.62 – a height he unsurprisingly sailed over without any problems whatsoever.
Nor did 5.82 pose any problems for the Swede, who also cleared the subsequent height, 5.92. It was there that his competitors began to struggle.
Of the five competitors who had accompanied Duplantis up to that height, only OS silver medalist Sam Kendricks, USA, cleared it and kept the competition alive.
At 6 meters, Duplantis was then able to secure his victory in the competition. He cleared it on his first attempt, while the American fouled three times and had to concede defeat.
Thereafter, the Swede raised the bar to 6.15 – a new competition record. That's where the first failure of the evening came for Duplantis. Nor did the second attempt succeed, but on the third, he flew over the bar.
However, the large audience in attendance did not get to see any attempts at the world record height of 6.26 this evening. Duplantis thanked the audience after 6.15 and praised them in the competition speaker's microphone for their support.
I was very tired towards the end, but you lifted me when I needed it most, thank you so much, he says.
