Despite large energy resources, including natural gas, the regime in Iran has been forced to ration electricity in recent weeks. One reason is that the temperature around Iran has been below freezing, which has meant that schools and official government buildings have been forced to close due to the cold.

President Masoud Pezeshkian apologized to Iran's population for the energy problems and promised in his statement on state TV that the shortage would be resolved next year.

An increased energy consumption by households due to the cold weather is cited as a reason for the rationing, and that key power plants have been forced to close entirely or partially due to overconsumption, according to the state-controlled news agency Irna.
