The Central African country's decision was announced late on Thursday evening.
Chad has played a crucial role regarding France's military presence in Africa. The country has been Paris' last foothold in the Sahel region since being forced to withdraw its forces from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
This is not a break with France, as happened in Niger and elsewhere, says Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah, whose country still hosts around 1,000 French soldiers, to AFP.
At a press conference with the French Foreign Minister earlier on Thursday, Koulamallah described France as an important partner, but emphasized that the country has now "matured". Neither of them specified a date for the withdrawal.
Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Déby, who took over the post after his father was killed by rebels in 2021 after 30 years in power, has been approaching Russia in recent months. So far, however, talks about stronger economic cooperation have not yielded any concrete results.
