Canada confirms a first case of the more dangerous variant of mpox, clade 1b.
The case was detected according to health authorities in the province of Manitoba in central Canada. The authorities assess the risks of spread to the population as small.
Contact tracing is ongoing to investigate where the person may have been infected.
WHO decided in August that mpox clade 1 should be classified as an international threat to human health. The infection has primarily spread on the African continent.
The first case outside Africa was reported in Sweden in August. Since then, cases have also been confirmed in, among others, Germany and the United Kingdom.
