The President also tells BBC that Rwanda attempted to carry out a coup in Burundi ten years ago – similar to "what they are doing in the Democratic Republic of Congo" now.
Despite extensive evidence from the UN, Rwanda has denied that the country supports and arms the rebel group M23, which has occupied large parts of mineral-rich eastern Congo-Kinshasa with the support of Rwandan military since 2021.
Rwanda has struck back and calls the President's accusations "surprising". They insist that the countries are cooperating on security plans for their common border, which has been closed for over a year.
Rwanda has also denied links to the revived rebel group Red Tabara. According to Évariste Ndayishimiye, they are a proxy force similar to M23, supported by Rwanda to destabilize Burundi.
The Burundians will not accept being killed in the same way as the Congolese are being killed. Burundians are fighters, says the President.
He continues to say that Burundi wants to resolve the issue through dialogue.
