The controversy concerns an addition to a passage that does not exist in the English original edition.
It was SVT's Cultural News that reported last week that Margareta Eklöf's translation contained a formulation that was not present in the English original regarding how the Nazis viewed the German people. Snyder believed that the addition altered his message.
"We have, in consultation with the author, decided to make a new translation and withdraw the old book," writes Åsa Ernflo, who is the acting publisher at Albert Bonniers publishing house.
In a press release, she states that there must be no doubt about the book's content or quality and emphasizes that the book's reasoning about the concept of freedom has great significance.
The translator Margareta Eklöf, born 1930, is well-reputed but demanded, due to the manuscript's "poor quality", that Albert Bonniers publishing house allow her to make the translation under a pseudonym.
