In the 2024 HBO documentary, Tonia Haddix is in constant conflict with the animal rights organization Peta and spares no means to keep her "babies". Several of the animals have appeared in Hollywood films and commercials as far back as the 80s.

The 55-year-old Haddix – who calls herself "the chimpanzees' Dolly Parton" – has now been sentenced to 46 months in prison for keeping the chimpanzee Tonka hidden in her basement and lying to the authorities about Tonka being dead, writes LA Times.

"Now that Tonia Haddix has been locked up, she will herself get to taste the suffering that she has inflicted on animals by locking them up in cages and depriving them of all forms of natural life", says Brittany Peet at the animal rights organization Peta in a statement.
