Stocker, who leads the conservative ÖVP, will lead the country's first three-party government in decades. The coalition between ÖVP, the social democratic SPÖ and the liberal Neos was presented on Thursday, after over five months of sounding out to reach a government solution.
In Austrian media, Stocker is described as an "unknown chancellor" as he is not a well-known name outside political circles. The 64-year-old is an educated lawyer and has never previously held a ministerial post.
The largest party in the election in September was the immigration-critical Freedom Party (FPÖ). However, leader Herbert Kickl failed to convince other parties to form a government with the far-right party.
