It is the Sudanese army that has not yet stated whether it will participate, and the meeting begins without representatives from its side.

"I announce our participation in the upcoming talks on a ceasefire on August 14, 2024, in Switzerland", wrote Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the leader of the paramilitary Sudanese group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on X earlier in July.

The war between the army and RSF has been ongoing since April last year.

Both sides have been accused of brutal war crimes, including deliberately targeting civilians, indiscriminately shelling residential areas, and blocking humanitarian aid.

The war in Sudan is described as the world's largest humanitarian disaster and has forced ten million people to flee.
