Another firefighter has died from injuries he sustained when he fought forest fires in Portugal. The man is the fourth fatality during the extensive fires in the country this summer.
As recently as on Wednesday, it was reported that another firefighter had died in the northern parts of the country. Several other firefighters are being treated in hospital for injuries they sustained during the firefighting work, some with severe burns, reports the Portuguese Correio da Manhã.
According to the European system for information on forest fires, Effis, around 278,000 hectares of land have been ravaged by fire in Portugal this year. In Europe, only the neighboring country Spain is more affected. There, over 400,000 hectares have burned.
