Age limit

You must be 18 years old to buy or use outdoor fireworks. It is also illegal to give outdoor fireworks to persons under 18.

Bangers

Bangers, i.e. pieces with a powerful bang as the main effect, have required a permit since 2002. Since 2015, special training has also been required. This also applies to bangers purchased abroad where there are no legal restrictions.

Rockets with sticks

Since 2019, both a permit and special training have been required to launch rockets with sticks.

Locations

Sometimes a permit is required to set off fireworks at a specific location, a permit issued by the police. Normally, no permit is required for New Year's Eve, but in densely populated areas, for example, it may be required even then. The rules can also vary between municipalities.

Approved pieces

Fireworks sold in Sweden must be approved. There must be a CE mark and a registration number on the product, as well as clear instructions for use and information about the manufacturer or importer.

Crimes

Handling permit-required fireworks without a permit is a criminal offense that can lead to prosecution. The criminal charge is unauthorized handling of explosive goods, or in severe cases, reckless endangerment or reckless destruction. All crimes carry a prison sentence.
