In Kharkiv, which has 1.4 million inhabitants, the libraries have been the most affected. More than 300 libraries have been damaged or destroyed in the region since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The figures come from the independent Ukrainian online newspaper Chytomo.
In Kherson, 150 libraries have been damaged, in Donetsk 125, and in Odessa 116.
138 Ukrainian libraries have been completely destroyed and 577 damaged. The occupation of certain areas also means that there is an unknown number. Ukraine's national library in Kiev – Yaroslav the Wise's library – was damaged earlier this summer by a Russian missile.
According to Chytomo's survey, 113 of Ukraine's museums have also been damaged and 13 destroyed since Russia invaded the country.
