Many residents joined the students for a seven-hour-long blockade of the Gazela Bridge over the Sava River. At the same time, a three-hour-long blockade of important roads in Novi Sad began, while students in Nis blocked a toll station for motorways at the entrance to the southern city.

The blockades are part of a protest campaign led by striking university students who demand justice for the victims of the November 1st disaster, which critics have blamed on corruption within the government.

The protests against corruption are on their way to becoming a nationwide uprising against President Aleksandar Vucic's populist government. He has accused the demonstrators of working for foreign intelligence services and aiming to overthrow him from power.

The student-led movement has already forced Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, Vucic's ally, and his government to resign.
