Zelensky: USA wants to appease Putin

Europe's capacity to defend itself is weak and the USA is trying to appease Russia's President Vladimir Putin, according to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj.

The USA is now saying things that are very beneficial to Putin, says Zelenskyj in an interview with the German media company ARD.

He adds that it is "because they want to appease him (Putin)".

They want to meet quickly and get a quick victory. But what they are after – "just a ceasefire" – is not a victory.

The interview was conducted in connection with the security conference in Munich on Saturday and has been translated from Ukrainian by ARD.

Zelenskyj also says that although preparedness has increased in recent years, Europe is weak in terms of military capacity.

When it comes to the number of military personnel, operational combat units, the navy, air force, drones … I honestly think that Europe is weak today.

The Ukrainian president arrived on Monday evening in Turkey, after a state visit to the United Arab Emirates.

The Russian delegation – Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Putin's seasoned adviser Yuri Ushakov – arrived on Monday in Saudi Arabia for talks with American diplomats starting on Tuesday.

Zelenskyj will also arrive in Saudi Arabia later in the week, but has said that he has not been invited to the talks between the USA and Russia.

According to the USA, the meeting between the two countries' delegations should not be seen as a negotiation.

American officials have said that Ukraine will be invited when "real negotiations" begin.
