A man who faked his own death and fled from the USA to avoid rape charges has been sentenced for sexual abuse against his former girlfriend.

The man was found guilty of a rape committed in 2008, but fled from the judicial system to Scotland. Authorities in the USA suspected that he was on British soil.

He was arrested in 2021 after staff on a covid ward at a hospital in Glasgow recognized him due to his tattoos and the image that Interpol had made public. He himself claimed that he was not the person in the picture, but that he was Irish and that he had never set foot in the USA.

The tattoos were something the hospital was behind, in an attempt to frame him when he lay unconscious with covid, he stated, according to the British BBC.

The sentence will be announced later this year.
