Embassies closed – but Kyiv calls threat fake

Air raid sirens have wailed over the capital and large parts of Ukraine. The USA warned this morning about "specific information" of a potential large-scale air raid against Kyiv during the day. Ukrainian authorities are urging vigilance, but also describe the threat as an exaggerated result of Russian troll accounts.

The alarms went off in the afternoon, as reports emerged that ballistic missiles had been fired from Russia towards Ukraine, including the capital. At the same time, alarms were also sounded in Russia about approaching Ukrainian missiles.

However, there were no immediate reports of bomb impacts – any projectiles seem to have been largely shot down.

Russian fake

The authorities in Kyiv went out in the afternoon and said that the threat to the capital is no worse than any other day. On the other hand, residents are urged to take it seriously and seek shelter as soon as the sirens sound. Moreover, one should be vigilant and skeptical of information spread online – many posts are obvious Russian fake, intended to spread panic, writes the intelligence service HUR on Telegram.

However, as a result of the tense situation, the USA has temporarily closed its embassy. The staff are advised to keep themselves safe, they write on their website.

The USA is also urging its citizens in Ukraine to be ready to seek shelter immediately. The reports come shortly after the USA gave Ukraine the green light for attacks with American missiles deep into Russia and the use of personnel mines against Russian forces.

Silence from Sweden

Even NATO countries Greece, Italy, and Spain have closed their embassies to the public on Wednesday.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry does not want to comment on how the Swedish mission is affected.

"The embassy in Kyiv is adapting its operations continuously to the prevailing security situation", writes the press service.
