The poisonous and rare violsnäckan has instilled fear in bathers on Spanish Costa Blanca. A beach was forced to close after two specimens were found.

There were lifeguards on the beach in Guardamar del Segura, just north of the Swedish favorite Torrevieja, who made the discovery that closed the entire beach, writes El Confidencial.

The violet snail, or directly translated from English: Blue dragon, does not usually stay in the Mediterranean but has previously this year been reported also outside Mallorca.

It is, despite its name, not covered by any shell and the clear blue color makes it visible clearly on the water surface.

The violet snail may only be between 3 and 4 centimeters but the diet of jellyfish makes it store nettling cells that lead to strong pain and can cause serious allergic reactions in humans.
