”The pattern of attacks on civilians and deliberate killings, which constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law, deepens our concern for ethnically motivated violence”, writes a spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk in a press release.
Of the victims, 57 people are reported to have been killed in attacks on August 11 alone. A further 32 people were killed between August 16 and 20, including 16 people who are reported to have been summarily executed in the Abu Shouk refugee camp. Furthermore, there are reports that at least 40 men have been taken away.
”We fear that the number of civilians killed is likely to be higher.”
The rebel group RSF is fighting against the Sudanese government forces in the civil war that broke out in the country in 2023.
The conflict has claimed over 40,000 lives and forced over 14 million to flee their homes. Aid organizations have recently warned of an impending famine and several countries are calling for humanitarian pauses in the fighting to allow emergency aid to be delivered.
