A federal judge stops all new admissions to the notorious migrant detention center "Alligator Alcatraz" in Florida's Everglades. A large part of the facility must also be dismantled within 60 days to protect nature, according to the decision.

According to Judge Kathleen Williams, the state and the federal government have refrained from making an analysis of the environmental consequences. The defense is a part of the Trump government's policy to deter migrants from seeking to enter the USA illegally.

The defense was hastily set up last summer on an abandoned airfield in the Big Cypress nature reserve, next to the Everglades national park. It is surrounded by marshlands with alligators, a rich birdlife and is a habitat for, among other things, the very rare Florida panther.

Both environmental groups, human rights organizations and the Miccosukee people have filed lawsuits against the defense.

The state of Florida will appeal the verdict, which is preliminary while the legal processes continue.
