Children are reported to be among the fatalities.
The bus was on its way back from Niagara Falls with over 50 people on board when it crashed into a ditch for unknown reasons about four miles east of Buffalo.
– We have several dead, several trapped and several injured, says police spokesperson James O’Callahan according to AP.
According to O’Callahan, many on the bus were Indians, Chinese and Filipinos, and an interpreter has been called in. The driver survived the crash.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul describes the accident as "tragic". Rescue teams "are working to rescue and provide assistance to all those involved", she writes on X.
Three helicopters are flying the injured to hospital. The road is closed in both directions.
