The volcano Shiveluch on the Kamchatka Peninsula in easternmost Russia has had an eruption following a powerful earthquake, reports international media citing the Russian state-controlled news agency Tass. The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 occurred on Sunday morning local time.
According to Tass, the ash clouds from the eruption have risen up to eight kilometers above sea level. There are no reports of personal injuries or destroyed buildings as a result of the incident.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially issued a tsunami warning, but later cancelled the alert.
Several aftershocks were recorded, but of lower magnitude.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is located in an area in the Pacific Ocean with high seismic activity and where there are also several active volcanoes.
