In November 2024, the entrance roof in the train station in Serbian Novi Sad collapsed. 16 people, including at least one child, lost their lives.
The prosecution authority in Novi Sad is investigating the incident and on Friday, eleven people were arrested, suspected of abuse of public office. Among them is Tomislav Momirovic, the country's former minister for construction, transport and infrastructure.
Another transport minister, Goran Vesic, resigned a few days after the incident. He has been wanted, but is currently hospitalized, according to the prosecutor.
After the roof collapse, thousands of Serbs took to the streets in protest. Many blame the incident on corruption and inadequate supervision and demand transparency in the investigation. Demonstrations have been held regularly since then and in January, the country's prime minister, Milos Vucevic, resigned.
The train station in Novi Sad had undergone several renovations and construction work was underway in part of the station when the roof collapsed.
