The app's existence or non-existence on the American market has become a highly politicized question. It has been said that Tiktok needs to sever ties with Chinese Bytedance and get American owners to be able to continue operating within the USA.
Over the weekend, ahead of the deadline to secure American owners, the app was shut down. A message stating that the app was not available met users – along with a hope directed at incoming President Donald Trump to lift the ban.
Barely a day later, Tiktok is online again for many Americans, and in a welcome message to users, reference is made to "thanks to President Trump's efforts".
However, via Apple's and Google's app stores, it is still not possible to access Tiktok for the time being.
Donald Trump will be sworn in as president later in the day. He has indicated that he will give Tiktok a 90-day deadline allowing them to continue their operations. Trump has also opened up for the possibility that only 50 percent American ownership will be required for Tiktok to continue.
