Systembolaget Sees Continued Decline in American Product Sales

The Swedes continue to choose American products off at Systembolaget. The summer's decline is clear. If this keeps up it can have an effect on our purchases, says Marie Hultin, category manager at Systembolaget.

Close to the time when the President of the USA, Donald Trump, announced that he would introduce new tariffs against the EU and Sweden, several grassroots initiatives were started to boycott American goods. Among other things, the goods that Systembolaget sells were affected. And the trend continues.

The total decline for American products is approximately 17 percent this year, so the decline continues, says Marie Hultin.

We cannot say exactly what it is due to, but it coincides with what happens on the political arena since the beginning of the year. So it is most likely a part of this decline.

Wine loses the most

It is mostly wine that loses. Until July 31 this year, American wine has seen a decline of 20 percent.

It is easier to replace products within the wine category with other origins if you feel hesitant to buy American products.

The sale of American spirits and beer has also seen a decline, but it is so small that it is difficult to draw any general conclusions.

We are losing on the entire spirits sale and are approximately minus 2 percent for the first seven months of the year, while the USA is at around minus 3 percent. The difference is small and could be due to a product being sold out.

Beer from the USA has lost around 2 percent, but American beer generally has a small market share, says Marie Hultin.

Will not affect purchases

She does not see that the decline will affect how Systembolaget purchases products in the short term. In the procurements for wine, Systembolaget takes into account the lead times that harvests and seasons require. Currently, the plans for 2027 are being finalized.

If we take into account species and agricultural rhythm, it is that foresight that applies.

But if this continues, it may have an effect on our purchases, but then the decline must be strong and continue over time. We will see where it ends, but in the short term, you will not notice it in the range, says Marie Hultin.

Corrected: In an earlier version, the wrong time period was stated for the decline in wine.
