The increase is explained by the fact that the areas for winter wheat are expected to be record-large, shows this year's harvest forecast from the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
The harvest of winter wheat is expected to be 3.3 million tons, which is an increase of 23 percent compared to 2024 and 14 percent compared to the average of the last five years. Winter wheat is expected to account for 57 percent of the total grain harvest, the Swedish Board of Agriculture writes in a press release.
The total harvest for oil crops, such as rape and turnip rape, is estimated to be just over 0.34 million tons. This is an increase of 21 percent from last year and at the same level as the average for the last five years. The increase is mainly explained by increased areas for winter rape, which is expected to account for 86 percent of the total oil crop harvest.
"The weather has been continuously good during the summer, even if there are local variations. Based on what we hear from farmers, most are satisfied with the yield and the intensity of our reception also indicates a good harvest, but at the same time it is important to point out that profitability is challenged by low grain prices and high input costs", writes Per Germundsson, grain manager at Lantmännen, in a comment.
