Roberto Eid Forest, head of the local police area Örebro, says at a press conference that the shooting took place outside the mosque in connection with the Friday prayer. Alarm about loud bangs came in at 13.44 and a large police and rescue effort began.
What we know now is that two male persons in their 20-30s were found shot at the parking lot outside the mosque. At least one perpetrator was seen leaving the scene, says Roberto Eid Forest.
The men were taken to the hospital by ambulance, where the other man is still being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.
Eid Forest states that an intense hunt is underway to apprehend the person or persons behind the shooting. The police have a description.
I want to emphasize that we currently do not see any connection to the mosque. On the other hand, we see connections to criminal groups in Örebro.
Known to the police
He says that the victims are known to the police from before.
Were they targeted or could it have been a so-called mistaken shooting?
It's obviously very early to say. What we know is that there are connections. We have knowledge of these people who have been shot. The picture I have is that it is targeted at either one of them or both, says Roberto Eid Forest to TT.
No so-called security zones are planned to be established.
The police are now investigating murder, attempted murder, and serious weapons offenses.
”Of course serious”
”Every violent act of this kind is of course serious, and I can understand that it gives rise to special concern that something like this occurs at a place of worship”, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (The Moderate Party) in a written comment to TT.
Further, he writes that the connections to the criminal gangs are ”another example of the ruthlessness of organized crime”.
