Over 34,000 euro, equivalent to more than 380,000 kronor, has been collected for a homeless man in Amsterdam who handed in a wallet containing nearly 2,000 euro to the police.
The story of the 33-year-old man's honesty has gained widespread attention. He himself says that his life has been turned "completely upside down", according to the online fundraising site that collected the sum in just one day.
The man had been homeless for a year and a half but can now rent a place to live, according to the site. Many have also contacted the man and offered him jobs.
He found the wallet at Amsterdam's central station while "doing his rounds" to look for cans to recycle. The wallet contained no documents identifying the owner.
I want to thank everyone so, so much … I can't describe how I'm feeling right now … I'm overwhelmed by people saying such sweet, kind things, he says in an Instagram video clip.
I'm lost for words, I don't know what to say, I'm full of adrenaline, he says, adding that he could rebuild his life with the collected money.
If no one comes forward to claim the money he handed in to the police within a year, it will go to the finder.
