Consumption of cigarettes continues to decrease, but snuffing, mainly due to the increasing popularity of white nicotine snuff, is increasing even more.
The use of e-cigarettes, so-called vapes, is also clearly increasing.
This is stated by CAN, the Central Association for Alcohol and Narcotics Information, in its annual report, which compiles the total consumption of cigarettes and snuff in Sweden.
The report shows the total use of cigarettes and snuff between 2003 and 2023.
According to the report, cigarette consumption has decreased by 58 percent since 2003, and since 2021, the corresponding figure is 22 percent.
Snuff consumption in the form of brown snuff doses has increased by 50 percent since 2003, but by 120 percent if white snuff is included. Every third snuff dose sold in Sweden is now white snuff.
"Since 2021, the number of consumed snuff doses has increased by 15 percent if we count both brown and white snuff. But brown snuff decreased by 8 percent, while white snuff more than doubled," says Mats Ramstedt, research manager at CAN, in a press release.
The sale of liquids for electronic cigarettes was more than six times higher in 2023 compared to 2021.
