The Swedish Foreign Ministry is expanding the travel advisory due to the escalated conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against non-essential travel to the Rusizi district in southwestern Rwanda. Since Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised against non-essential travel to the Rubavu district in the northwestern parts of Rwanda.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as to the provinces of North and South Kivu, Ituri, Tanganyika, Kasaï, Kasaï Central, Maniema, and Haut Uélé, and to border areas up to a distance of 50 kilometers from the border with South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against non-essential travel to other parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

All decisions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' advisory are valid until further notice.

The background is that the fighting between the Democratic Republic of the Congo's military and the Rwanda-backed rebel group M23 in eastern Congo has intensified over the past week.
