The Libraries Breathe a Sigh of Relief: "A Relief"

Both the Swedish Library Association and the trade union DIK express relief that libraries are exempt from the so-called "informant law", according to the government investigator's proposal.

Both, however, turn against authorities such as the Employment Service and the Tax Agency being proposed to be obliged to report to the police if an undocumented immigrant is in their system.

Such an obligation "risks erasing the trust between people and between residents and authorities. It also moves the boundaries for what is possible, and can lead to the introduction of an intelligence duty for the entire public sector in the future", says Silvia Ernhagen, Secretary General of the Swedish Library Association, in a press release.

Anna Troberg, Chairperson of DIK, wonders how publicly employed staff at, for example, cultural schools, cultural centers, and museums are affected.

"The fact that the Minister for Migration says that, among other things, public libraries will be exempt from the reporting obligation is a Pyrrhic victory. The fundamental problems with the bill remain despite the exemptions. Exemptions can also be withdrawn", says Troberg in a press release.
