According to the Danish railway authority, the accident occurred between Kliplev and Tinglev. The train is believed to have been on its way from Copenhagen to Sønderborg via Fredericia.
The train is reported to have collided with a vehicle at a railway crossing.
The railway authority initially stated that the accident is considered extensive and serious. An ambulance helicopter was flown to the site, but it is unclear how many people were injured in the accident, and how many passengers were on the train.
The death is confirmed by several Danish media outlets.
The rescue efforts also included German ambulances, as the accident occurred near the border with Germany. The injured were also taken to the German city of Flensburg on the other side of the border.
A carriage came loose in the accident and overturned in a field. The train is stuck at a gravel area next to the track and all traffic on the single-track railway is cancelled.
We have set up a crisis team, says Tony Bispeskov, information manager at Danish DSB.
According to Bispeskov, the train is believed to have collided with a manure wagon.
