A Danish passenger train collided on late Friday afternoon with a manure wagon at a railway crossing.

One person has been killed and at least 20 people have been injured, according to Danish TV2. Among them are 15 schoolchildren who have been taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to the Sønderborg municipality to TV2.

The accident occurred between Kliplev and Tinglev. The train was on its way from Copenhagen to Sønderborg via Fredericia.

At least two ambulance helicopters were flown to the scene and the rescue efforts also included German ambulances, as the accident occurred near the border to Germany. Injured people were also taken to the German Flensburg on the other side of the border.

A wagon came loose in the accident and overturned on a field. The train is stuck at a gravel area next to the track and all traffic on the single-track railway is cancelled.

We have set up a crisis team, says Tony Bispeskov, information manager at the Danish railway company DSB.

Around 95 people were on board the train at the time of the accident, according to DR.
