The government must take a tougher stance against Hungary's Viktor Orbán in the EU, according to the Social Democrats.
Sweden should take the initiative to make a statement that strongly distances itself from Orbán's behavior, says Morgan Johansson (S).
Johansson points to the Hungarian prime minister's trips to Moscow, China, and even to Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence recently.
Orbán has acted irresponsibly, recklessly, and disloyally. The Hungarian presidency is not even three weeks old and has already gone off the rails, says Morgan Johansson, the party's foreign policy spokesperson.
The Social Democrats are demanding that Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) takes action at next week's foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels and initiates a statement against Orbán.
The EU's foreign ministers must put their foot down and strongly distance themselves from this traveling and make it clear that he does not represent the EU, says Johansson.
The Social Democrats also believe that the conditions for shortening the Hungarian EU presidency and letting Poland take over prematurely must be investigated.
If all EU foreign ministers can agree on a statement, it could be a first step towards taking the presidency away from Hungary, according to Johansson.
The possibility exists to make such a decision, if the European Council does so with a qualified majority, he says.
