The Eiffel Tower is changed forever after the Olympic Games

The Eiffel Tower was in the center during the Olympic Games in Paris. Now it is clear that the Olympic rings will remain permanently on the famous French landmark. I, as the Mayor of Paris, can decide and I have received permission from the IOC, says Anne Hidalgo to the newspaper Ouest-France.

But it won't be the same rings as during the Olympic Games. A lighter version of the Olympic symbols will eventually replace the ones attached to the Eiffel Tower during the Games, since the current ones are too heavy to remain there for a longer period.

The rings may not be the only memory of the Paris Olympic Games that will remain in the French capital. Mayor Hidalgo tells Ouest-France that she would like to keep the balloon built for the Olympic flame in the Tuileries park forever. However, since it stands on state-owned land, it's a decision that must be made by President Emmanuel Macron.

Paris has a special connection to the Olympic movement. That's where Pierre de Coubertin, the French baron who initiated the International Olympic Committee, IOC, and the modern Olympic Games in the 1890s, was born.

The city, together with London, is also the only one to have hosted the Summer Olympic Games three times.
