We from the church thought it felt right to get memorial stones in the churchyard with their names because they don't have any graves and headstones, says the former bishop of the Härnösand diocese, Eva Nordung Byström, to P4 Västernorrland.
In some way, we are rehabilitating those who were innocently executed.
The memorial stones feature the victims' names, ages, and hometowns. The names have been obtained by searching through court records, which have then been double-checked with existing research.
They were imprisoned, then there was a legal process, and then the majority of those who were sentenced were beheaded, and then they were burned, says Eva Nordung Byström.
The Church of Sweden is now, according to SVT Västernorrland, inaugurating three memorial stones with the names of 36 women and four men who were executed at the end of the 1600s.
The Härnösand municipality has also honored the victims of the trials with a memorial stone.
