Terrorism Researcher: Bestial Acts

Osama Krayem from Malmö has already been sentenced to long prison terms for terrorist acts in France and Belgium. But it is still important that he is brought to justice again, says terrorism researcher Magnus Ranstorp. It is important in principle and morally that he is finally held accountable for his bestial acts.

Osama Krayem, who is now being detained on suspicion of gross war crimes and terrorist offenses, has already been sentenced to a total of life imprisonment in France and Belgium for his involvement in the terrorist attacks in Paris 2015 and in Brussels 2016.

During the trial in France regarding the terrorist attack in Paris, Krayem stated that he was present when the Jordanian pilot was locked in a cage and burned to death by IS in Syria 2014.

He was there, so I mean that he was involved in the actual act. It is unclear whether it was he who lit the fire, but he was there and that makes him an accomplice, says Magnus Ranstorp.

Trained in Syria

According to Ranstorp, Krayem did not hold a high-ranking position within IS, but was more of an executor. He was trained by IS in Syria together with the others who carried out the Paris and Brussels attacks.

He was the only one of the two who traveled from Sweden and participated in the Paris and Brussels attacks who survived, says he.

Krayem is currently being held in France, where he has been sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment for his involvement in the terrorist attack in Paris. He has also been sentenced to life imprisonment in Belgium for his involvement in the terrorist attack in Brussels.

Unfortunate Transfer

Magnus Ranstorp thinks it is an important question what will happen with the serving of the different sentences if Krayem is also convicted of the crime he is now suspected of in the Swedish investigation.

What often happens is that they are transferred back to Sweden and then can receive various types of leniency or sentence reductions. And that would be extremely unfortunate since there is a big difference between serving a sentence in a prison in France or Belgium compared to in Swedish correctional care, says Ranstorp.
