On her Instagram account, 21-year-old Tonya Paulsson writes:
"I have chosen to switch national teams to my mother's home country, Taiwan, to continue developing but also because they believe in me. I have no confidence in the Swedish national team and do not feel that they want to invest in me. Therefore, I have made this decision and want to give myself the best conditions to fulfill my dreams and goals".
The news came as a bolt from the blue, according to Jonas Juhl Christiansen, elite coach at the Swedish Gymnastics Federation.
I am shocked, very surprised, and think it's obviously sad and not what we had hoped for, he says to SVT.
About the criticism, he says:
It's her experience, we believe that we have invested in Tonya, we think that we have a strong investment in all the girls, says Jonas Juhl Christiansen to SVT.
The elite coach states that he received the news via Paulsson's father.
We will of course seek dialogue with her to get more concrete information about what this is about, says Juhl Christiansen.
Paulsson was part of the Swedish national team in artistic gymnastics that reached the final in the European Championship in Italy this spring. It was the first time a Swedish women's team made it to the final. The team finished eighth and last in the final.
Paulsson competes for the Malmö club GK Motus Salto.
