After the 23-year-old reigning Olympic champions and double European Championship gold medalists Åhman and Hellvig earlier on Friday defeated the Dutch Ruben Penninga and Matthew Immers with 2–1 in sets in the pair's round of 16, there was a hope that the 20-year-old Hölting Nilsson and the 19-year-old Andersson would be able to defeat the Olympic silver medalists Ehlers and Wickler and secure an all-Swedish quarterfinal.
It did not turn out that way.
The young Swedish talents lost with 1–2 in sets and only one Swedish team is now left in the European Championship.
Right now, I would not say that it is a huge achievement. We show that we can at least maintain a decent level, says Elmer Andersson to SVT.
In Saturday's quarterfinal, it will therefore be a replay of last year's Olympic Games final in Paris when Åhman and Hellvig outclassed Ehlers and Wickler with 2–0 in sets at the Eiffel Tower.
