The bankruptcy threat is said to concern the entire Swedish operation of the battery manufacturer.
According to sources, only a small circle within the company is currently aware of the impending decision.
"We never comment on rumors, and there are many such rumors about us in these times," writes Northvolt's press chief Erik Zsiga in an SMS to TT.
Northvolt's crisis follows a year marked by delayed deliveries and problems in scaling up production of high-quality batteries, which, among other things, led to the German car manufacturer BMW withdrawing an order worth over 20 billion kronor in June last year.
Since September, the battery manufacturer has, among other things, discontinued several major investments, laid off a fifth of its staff, and put its subsidiary Northvolt Expansion – which was building a new battery factory – into bankruptcy with several billion kronor in debt.
The highest-ranking executive at the Skellefteå factory resigned in October, followed by the company's CEO Peter Carlsson.
In November, the company applied for a reconstruction process in the USA, known as chapter 11, but has since continued to incur significant losses.
