In Piteå, cats have also fallen ill with salmonella from small birds, reports SVT News Norrbotten. Humans can also be infected.

If you notice that birds are starting to die, you should keep an eye on your cat, says Henrik Uhlhorn, deputy state veterinarian at SVA, to SVT.

Birds can carry salmonella bacteria and when they become weaker after the winter, some of them become ill. Then they start excreting bacteria with their feces and infect other birds, for example, at bird feeders.

According to Henrik Uhlhorn, you should keep the area under the bird feeder clean and use bird feeders that are designed so that birds cannot walk around among the seeds.
