Russia declares a state of emergency in the border region of Belgorod, which has been attacked in the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

The situation in the Belgorod region is still extremely difficult and tense due to shelling from the Ukrainian armed forces, writes Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on Telegram.

A state of emergency will therefore be introduced from Wednesday, he adds.

Russia has previously ordered evacuation in parts of the region. Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, is located near the Kursk region where Ukraine launched its ground offensive last week. A state of emergency has also been declared there and around 121,000 people have fled their homes.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that they have no interest in retaining the Russian territory they currently control.
