Russia claims that the country's fighter jets have prevented two American bomber planes from crossing the Russian border in the Barents Sea in the Arctic.
The American defense forces regularly conduct flights over international waters and claim that the operations are carried out in neutral airspace and in accordance with international law.
However, in recent months, Moscow has reacted more aggressively to the exercises. In June, the USA was accused of using drones over neutral waters in the Black Sea to help Ukraine attack the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula.
Moscow then said that the flight risked leading to "direct" military confrontation with NATO, and that the military was preparing for an "operational response".
