During the night towards Sunday, the door to Helsingevatten's high-water reservoir in Bollnäs, which supplies the town with drinking water, was forced open. As a result of the break-in, the municipal water company has issued a boiling recommendation as a precautionary measure.
Many Bollnäs residents have, however, chosen another way to ensure their access to drinking water.
Even soft drinks
Several food retailers in the area testify to a rush for bottled water on Sunday.
We open at six in the morning, and already then people were queuing to buy water, says Ingmarie Jakobsson, store manager at Ica Maxi.
The water we had in stock sold out very quickly, and we have now had to order extra pallets of water.
According to Ingmarie Jakobsson, customers have also started buying soft drinks in bulk after the bottled water disappeared from the shelves.
Restaurants around can't use their soda machines as usual, so they come here to buy pure soda instead. It's been a very unusual day for us, much more hectic than a regular Sunday, says Ingmarie Jakobsson.
Boiling recommendations
Willys in the area also reports that bottled water sold out quickly during the day.
It was a flood of people. Now the stock is completely empty, they've emptied everything, says store worker Caisa Nilsson at Willys to Ljusnan.
The boiling recommendation applies to Bollnäs and Freluga urban areas, and Helsingevatten was waiting for test results on Sunday afternoon.
