Gaetz has been nominated for the heavy post of Minister of Justice in Donald Trump's future government. The election continues to create problems within the Republicans.
The 42-year-old Gaetz from Florida met leading Republican senators behind closed doors in Washington on Wednesday to secure support. It is the Senate that approves a Minister of Justice.
The former congressman Matt Gaetz is accused of having paid for sexual services and drugs.
At the same time, the House of Representatives' ethics committee met to discuss the delicate issue of the former colleague Gaetz. They have long been working on a report about Gaetz and his suspected sex purchases, but the investigation was interrupted when Gaetz left his seat in the House of Representatives after Trump's nomination.
All Republicans voted against publishing the report, and thus managed to stop the proposal. The Democratic members voted in favor.
However, influential Republican senators cautiously expressed support for Gaetz.
He deserves a chance to argue why he should become Minister of Justice, said Lindsey Graham.
No free pass, but neither a lynching, continued Graham and received support from Republican senatorial colleagues.
