The number of demolitions amounted to 181, or approximately one home every other day, in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem, which is home to over 350,000 Palestinians. Additionally, a number of other types of buildings were destroyed.
Israel also appears to have abandoned its previous policy of not demolishing Palestinian homes during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, according to Ir Amim, which maps Israeli settlements.
According to human rights organizations, Israel's discriminatory policy makes it almost impossible for Palestinians to build or expand their residential properties in East Jerusalem. This leads many to build without permits, which in turn gives Israel an excuse to destroy the houses in question.
Israel also demolishes family homes belonging to Palestinians accused of violence against Israelis.
Israel illegally annexed East Jerusalem, which Palestinians want as the capital of their state, in connection with the Six-Day War in 1967.
