Venezuela's opposition leader María Corina Machado is awarded the European Council's human rights prize, the Vaclav Havel Prize, for her fight for democracy under President Nicolás Maduro's rule.
Machado says she is "very moved, honored and grateful" to be the first from Latin America to win the prize.
The Vaclav Havel Prize, named after the former Czech dissident and later president, has been awarded every year since 2013 to a human rights activist and is the European Council's finest prize. Previous winners include, among others, Yazidi Nadia Murad, Russian Ljudmila Alexejeva, and Congolese Julienne Lusenge.
