SMHI measured a total of 3,678 lightning strikes on Friday. It was worst around Gotland where 1,319 lightning bolts struck, but then some lightning bolts that struck over the sea near the island are also counted.

We were more worried about the gusts of wind – the strong winds that would arise in connection with the cold front and the showers that passed, says SMHI's meteorologist Linnea Rein Wittskog.

Strong winds

In the Baltic Sea, the wind reached storm strength in some areas. At Örskär off the Uppland coast, it blew 29.2 meters per second in gusts of wind and at Brämön off Sundsvall, 23.6 meters per second was measured. Hard winds swept in over all of Norrland and large parts of Svealand, but later subsided somewhat.

Norsjö in Västerbotten got some of the strongest winds. There, SMHI measured that it blew 21.4 meters per second.

Then you have to take these gusts of wind with a pinch of salt because between our measuring stations it may also have blown very much.

The winds did not become quite as strong as SMHI feared when yellow warnings were issued, but parts of the country were still affected. In Gävleborg County, among other places, there was a power outage after trees fell over power lines.

Can be snow

The cold front seems to have blown away the last of the summer heat. On Saturday, the low-pressure center lies over the Bay of Bothnia and it remains windy. On Sunday, sunny weather is expected in large parts of the country, but it will not be the same warmth as earlier in the week, but rather 15 to 20 degrees. Even during the next week, it is expected to be relatively cool.

It will be especially very cold in northern Sweden next week, maybe even some snow in the mountain areas.
