Those who want to see a really cool moon should raise their gaze to the sky tonight. Then, the year's first supermoon will occur.

The moon will appear both larger and shine stronger than usual. This is because it is extra close to the Earth.

The difference between a micromoon, when it is farthest away, and the supermoon is approximately 14 percent in size. It also shines about 30 percent stronger.

This time, the moon will be 361,969 kilometers from the Earth. Normally, the moon is 356,500 kilometers from the Earth when it is closest, and 406,700 kilometers when it is farthest away.

But it's not the only supermoon this year. Next time will be on September 18, followed by October 17 when it will be closest this year. The last time will be on November 15, at approximately the same distance as now.
