It is the largest increase in the number of redundancies since the Omställningsfonden was founded in 2012, says Eva Wikström, CEO of Omställningsfonden to Ekot.

During the last six months, approximately 1,500 people within the welfare sector have been made redundant due to lack of work, mainly preschool teachers which account for 37 percent of the total redundancies, but also teacher assistants and preschool teachers have been affected.

According to Omställningsfonden, the reasons may be due to the municipalities' strained economy and the demographic development.

Fewer children are being born, which means smaller groups of children, and then you have to adapt the activities in the municipalities, says Eva Wikström to Ekot.

In total, approximately 1.3 million people work within the welfare sector.
