This is proposed by the government in a council on legislation submission.

Lotta Edholm (The Liberals), minister for among other things adult education, points out that many today interrupt their SFI studies prematurely. In 2023, it was almost half of all SFI students who did so.

Many of them have probably had the plan to come back after a while, but it is quite difficult and the risk is that you lose in the Swedish language when you are away, says Edholm.

The government considers that we need a more intensive and better cohesive study period in SFI to get better results.

However, it should be possible to extend the three years by up to three more years if there are special reasons, for example illness.

It will then be the municipality, which is responsible for SFI, that will decide whether the study period should be extended.
